Why we celebrate Holi: Story of Holika

Well, there are lots of fiction and stories prevalent in Indian mythological books about the celebration of Holi, but a story of Holika is considered as the paramount reason behind the celebration of Holi.

As per the famous Hindu religious book called “Vishnupuran”, there was a king named Hiranyakashipu in ancient India who was more like a demon. Lord Vishnu killed his brother for his cruel behavior with common people, now the demon wanted to take revenge on Lord Vishnu. So he prayed for years to gain some supernatural power so that nobody could kill him. By his dedication and grace of almighty, he gained the power but soon after he got it he began misusing it. He declared himself as the ultimate god and asked everyone to stop worshipping Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu began problematic and cruel for his state, he made thousands of people die with no perpetration at all. He had a son named “Prahalad”, he was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu which was not soothing to his father. He ordered him to stop treating Vishnu as a god and regret his mishap. Prahlad disobeyed his father and never stopped worshiping Vishnu. In the end, Hiranyakashipu took the decision to kill his own son, he made several efforts to kill him but it was not working at all by the grace of Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu had a sister and her name was Holika, she was immune to fire. So he ordered his sister to sit on a pyre of fire by taking Prahalad in her lap. She immediately said yes and pyre was ready to kill Prahalad. When Holika sat with her nephew Prahalad in the fire, Prahalad was reciting Vishnu’s name and nothing happened to him and Holika turned to ashes. Hiranyakashipu regretted lot after this but he never stopped doing cruel and harsh actions. After this lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu, and from then the day is celebrated as Holi.
